How to Join Kenya Prisons Service

How to be recruited into the Kenya Prisons Service as a Constable, Cadet Officer or Technician & Artisan. The Kenya Prisons Service (K.P.S) is a department within the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government. It is under the command of the Commissioner-General of Prisons and is tasked with: containing and keeping inmates in safe custody, rehabilitating and reforming offenders, facilitating administration of justice, and promoting prisoners opportunity for social re-integration.

Kenya Prisons Constables Pass-Out

Kenya Prisons announces/advertises to the general public the recruitment of young men and women into the Service to train as Prison Constables/Cadet Officers/Technicians & Artisans. Those who wish to join must attend the exercise at the designated recruitment centers and dates in their respective Counties. Succesful candidates who are recruited are then sent to the Kenya Prisons Staff training college in Ruiru and undergo an intensive 9 months paramilitary training course for Constables/Technicians & Artisans and 13 months for Cadet Officers. In addition, while undergoing professional training, recruits also undertake a certificate or diploma course in Security and Correctional Science offered by Kenyatta University.

Entry Requirements

Potential candidates who wish to join must possess below-listed qualifications:

  • Must be a Kenyan citizen
  • Hold a valid Kenya National Identity card
  • Aged between 18 - 26 years for high school certificate holders, up to 28 years for diploma holders and up to 30 years for university degree holders.
  • Height at least 5'4" tall for men and 5'2" for women
  • Have a minimum mean grade of D+ (plus) and above in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution
  • Be physically and medically fit
  • Have good hearing and clear vision
  • Have no criminal record
  • Female candidates MUST not be pregnant at the time of recruitment and during training

Academic / Technical Qualifications

a. Cadet Officers: Candidates must possess a relevant undergraduate degree from a recognized institution of higher learning.

b. Technicians: Candidates must possess a relevant certificate /diploma from a recognized institution and be registered with the relevant bodies where applicable.

c. Artisans: Candidates must possess a minimum mean grade of D+ at KCSE or its equivalent qualification from a recognized institution. Or, a Certificate in Government Trade Test Grade III/II/I from a recognized institution. Or, a Certificate in Craft or its equivalent qualification from a recognized institution. In addition, they must have two (2) years work experience and above.

Photocopies of the same are also required as originals are returned to the owners before leaving the recruitment center.
